The nineteenth-century statue topping the central column of Rossio is officially of Dom Pedro IV -after whom the square is named- though in fact it was cast originally as Emperor Maximilian of Mexico. The statue just happened to be in Lisbon en route from France to Mexico when news came through of Maximilian's assassination in 1867, and it was decided that since Maximilian would have no further use of it, it would do just as well for Dom Pedro. The statue is now the focus of a weekly flower market (Sat 7am-2pm). On the northwestern side of the square, there's a horseshoe-shaped entrance to Rossio station, a mock-Manueline complex with the train platforms an improbable escalator-ride above the street-level entrances.
